How To:

How to Wait

Waiting has never been something that has come easily for me or probably anyone else. But our God calls us to wait just like He called His people to wait throughout the Old Testament. Flash forward 2,000 years and our Messiah, Jesus has come and so now what? We wait. We humbly wait for the Son of Man to “come in the clouds” (Mark 13:26). Thankfully in God’s mercy and grace, He has given us a guide book on the best ways to wait. Spoiler: the best way to wait is to stay busy in the things that God has commanded us to do.

There will always be times of waiting in our lives. Waiting for children, waiting to find a husband, waiting to graduate college, waiting for a job, and the list goes on. In fact, if you think about it our whole life is essentially one long waiting game.

“I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given to you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in Him in all speech and all knowledge even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.”1

But in all of this, we can look back on the times that we have waited for God and realize all the good that has come from our waiting periods. For me waiting has really been a refining fire in my life. It gives me a chance to look at what I’m waiting for and say, “Is this what God wants for my life right now?” or “Am I making this thing that I’m waiting for an idol?” Marriage and children are wonderful, but that’s not what this life is about. We must remember why God has placed us on this Earth.

Our patience and humility during our waiting are often one of the biggest examples of Christ’s work in our lives. An unbeliever will not understand why you are calm and peaceful even though you aren’t getting what you want. Our contentment in our circumstances has the ability to bring people to Christ. What an amazing thing to think about! Instead of complaining about waiting we should be praising the Lord for our unique ability to show people the peace of God.

Here are some verses that I have found to be comforting in my times of waiting:

“Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him…”2

“But as for me, I will watch expectantly for the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me.”3

I think about the time before I was a believer and I praise Him because he was slow to anger when I was still an unbeliever.  “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”4 He is waiting to come back so that His chosen will have the chance to come to salvation.

As we wait let us use this time to be lights in this dark world. I pray that we will not forget our calling in this life; to love God and keep his commandments.

I would love to hear about a time when God used your waiting period for good. It’s so encouraging to hear what God has done in another person’s life. Leave your story in the comments below!
